HOPE ESTATE
From the series Hope Estate, shot in Kingston, Jamaica in 2023.Within the brief space of four months in 2001, I lost my father, mother and grandmother. This cluster of traumatic events permanently shaped my life and my vision of the world. Those losses have had a profound effect on my mental health, and have made me utterly incapable of loving fearlessly. And there was still more bereavement to come.
In the words of musician Nick Cave, “Grief and love are forever intertwined. Grief is the terrible reminder of the depths of our love and, like love, grief is non-negotiable.”
For this series, I decided to return to those haunted places in my hometown where I first learned what it is to truly mourn, including the chapel where the most significant funerals of my life were all held. retraced my steps and I relived each moment of each apocalypse, using the visual language of tropical flora to ponder that mysterious pact between unconditional love and everlasting sorrow.
